Wiki Version:
The purpose of this project is to make polymer brushes on graphene that can be used in designing new composites. The polymer brushes are grown from functionalized graphene made by a diazonium salt and graphite. The first part of the project is to synthesize a diazonium salt that can be functionalized onto the graphene. 4-Chloromethylbenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate is chosen for this project, since the chloride will be a good initiator for polymerization. The functionalized graphene is made by diazonium chemistry during electrochemical exfoliation of graphite. The functionalized graphene will then be polymerized using single-electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) with the monomers PGMA or PHEMA.
