This follow-up experiment will explore the role of task instructions on subject performance. The experimental procedure and data analysis procedure will be identical to the main experiment, with one exception. The unstudied change detection task will be replaced with the studied change detection task (six objects, one of which is an unstudied exemplar, followed by the same objects with the unstudied exemplar replaced with its studied complement), but rather than instructing participants to find the change, we will instruct them to ignore the first array of objects and simply identify the familiar item in the second array. Participants will first complete the change detection task with studied objects, followed by the ignored-array change detection, then the 6AFC memory test, and finally the 2AFC memory test. The 2AFC memory task in order to replicate the findings of the main experiment. If participants show performance that does not differ from the 6AFC memory test and is better than their performance on the change-detection task, it indicates that the long-term memory information is available during change-detection but goes unused. The data analysis procedure will be the same as the main experiment, with the exception of the comparisons: * Studied change detection accuracy vs. ignored change detection accuracy * Ignored change detection accuracy vs. 6AFC accuracy * 6AFC accuracy vs. studied change detection accuracy (this will serve to replicate the findings in the main experiment)
