Description: Intimate partner violence (IPV) involves physical, sexual, and psychological abuse committed by individuals towards their romantic partners, which can lead to serious physical and psychological consequences. One of the most common reasons why people do not end abusive relationships is investment. Once a person has substantial emotional, financial, and social ties with a partner, it becomes very difficult to end the relationship even if it is unhealthy. A more promising route to reducing IPV prevalence may be to help people recognize warning signs of abuse early on, before they have become highly invested in the relationship. The central goal of this study is to determine which, if any, non-abusive thoughts, feelings, or behaviors are predictive of physical, psychological, and/or sexual abuse.
