# Data Management Plan
This document presents the data used as part of Philippe Joly's Ph.D. project on "**Political Protest and Generational Change in New Democracies**." The data management plan follows the [model of the University of Bielefeld](https://data.uni-bielefeld.de/en/data-management-plan).
## Existing types of data
_Description of existing data that can be reused for the project and how their integration could look like_
The project uses two types of existing data: Individual-level data from nationally-representative surveys and country-level data from expert surveys and international organizations.
### Individual-level data
* [World Values Survey (WVS)](http://www.worldvaluessurvey.org/wvs.jsp)
* [European Values Study (EVS)](http://www.europeanvaluesstudy.eu)
* [European Social Survey (ESS)](http://www.europeansocialsurvey.org)
The WVS, EVS, and ESS asked respondents about their participation in three forms of protest: demonstrations, petitions, and boycotts. The data also contains information on respondents political values and attitudes together with sociodemographic information.
### Country-level data
* [Polity-IV Project](http://www.systemicpeace.org/inscrdata.html)
* [Varieties of Democracy Project](https://www.v-dem.net)
* [World Bank Open Data](https://data.worldbank.org)
These organizations provide data, at the country-level, on the quality and longevity of democratic institutions, levels of political repression together with different socioeconomic indicators.
## Data created in the project
_Details on the types of data and formats and the estimated amount of data that will be used and created, along with further information on the process of creating the data and quality assurance (such as documentation and validation measures)_
### Datasets
The project merges and harmonizes individual and structural data in order to produce three datasets.
#### Dataset 1: Data on protest experience in 55 democracies (1981-2014)
The study merges data from all six waves of the World Values Survey (WVS) and all four rounds of the European Value Study (EVS). From the original survey data, a subsample of democratic states, for which at least two nationally-representative waves were available, was selected. This left responses from over 275,000 respondents in 55 countries and 223 country-waves, from 1981 to 2014. The data was then merged with country-level indicators of economic development, level of democracy, and democratic experience.
#### Dataset 2: Data on protest experience in East and West Germany (1990-2008)
The dataset was constituted using the German results of three waves of the European Values Study (EVS). The pooled EVS datafile has a sample of 7,548 respondents in 1990, 1999, and 2008.
#### Database 3: Data on annual protest participation in East and West Germany (2002-2015)
The dataset was constituted using the German results of seven rounds of the European Social Survey (ESS). The pooled ESS datafile has a sample of 20,490 respondents from 2002 to 2015.
### Formats
The existing data was imported in tabular format (.dta, .csv, or .xls). The three databases are currently saved as Stata datafiles (.dta).
### Generated data
New variables were generated by transforming the existing data. A new indicator of protest experience at the individual-level was produced through an item response model. Also, a measure of political socialization context was generated by crossing the historical data at the country-level with respondents’ year of birth.
## Data organization
_Details on consistent data organization within the project (e.g. for data storage, data names, synchronization, versioning, and other collaboration workflows)_
The harmonized data is managed independently by the author of the project. The three datasets are stored on the author's computer for the duration of his Ph.D. Regular back-ups are planed on the OSF platform.
## Administrative and legal aspects
### Copyright/Data owner
The terms of use of the existing datasets can be summarized as follows (but see references for more details):
Data | Copyright | No restriction, non-profit | Citation necessary |Right to distribute | Deposit requirement
--- | --- | --- | --- | --- | ---
WVS1 | restricted | yes | yes | no | yes
EVS2 | restricted | yes | yes | no | yes
ESS3 | restricted | yes | yes | no | yes
Polity IV4 | restricted | yes (?) |yes | no | (?)
V-Dem5 | restricted | yes (?) | yes | no (?) | (?)
World Bank6 | mostly open | yes | yes | yes | no
### Access and use
_Defining access rights and target groups as well as specifying reuse restrictions (both technical and organizational)_
For target groups and access rights, see existing databases' terms of use.
### Data protection
_Defining access rights and target groups as well as specifying reuse restrictions (both technical and organizational)_
The WVS, EVS, and ESS together with their partner institutions have anonymzed the individual-level survey data.
### Data security and backup
_Defining how data protection will be ensured and giving details on the backup strategy_
The code necessary to reproduce the harmonized datasets is stored on the OSF platform.
### Archiving, sharing, and publishing data
_Which data will be shared? How will data be shared? Information on the planned interoperability with external discipline-specific data services_
As this project is based on publicly-available, yet copyright protected data, the archiving strategy will be centered around the publication on public repositories of scripts allowing for the replication of the harmonization procedure. The OSF platform is currently the preferred solution for distributing scripts.
## Responsibilities and duties
_How are the responsibilities for data management defined and distributed within the project?_
Data management is entirely done by the author of the project.
## Costs and resources
_Reports on the costs and the personnel expenditure for maintaining the data management plan and running costs for data curation, production of metadata, archiving, etc._
All work and costs are assumed by the author. Free and open source solutions will be privileged.
