ASL-LEX is a lexical database that provides lexical and phonological information about 2723 ASL signs. It includes the following information: subjective frequency ratings from deaf ASL signers, iconicity ratings from deaf ASL signers and hearing non-signers, transparency ratings, a measure of "guessability" for a subset of signs, videoclip duration, sign duration (sign onset and offset information), lexical class, and whether the sign is initialized, a fingerspelled loan sign or a compound. Information about English translations is available for a subset (25%) of signs.
The database also provides substantially more detailed phonological descriptions of signs (sign type, selected fingers, flexion, major and minor location, and movement). The phonological descriptions were used to derive more accurate sublexical frequency, phonological neighborhood density, and sign complexity calculations. We provide a lexicon-wide analyses of the correlational relationships among the lexical and phonological variables for the entire ASL database.
ASL-LEX 2.0 is compatible with ASL SignBank (http://slla.lab.uconn.edu/signbank/) and SLAAASh project (Sign Language Acquisition, Annotation, Archiving, and Sharing; http://slla.lab.uconn.edu/slaaash); ID glosses have been cross-referenced for ease of identification.
