Qualtrics Survey for Study Implementation -------------------------------------------- SET UP Prior to participant arrival, the experimenter will log in to our qualtrics survey and enter the subject number and the randomly assigned condition (labeled 1 or 2 during data collection). Experimenters will advance one page so that only a title “Memory and Perception Study” is visible on the computer screen when participants arrive. The experimenter will place a pencil and the folder containing the crossword puzzle in a folder on the desk in front of the participant’s keyboard. SCREEN BY SCREEN DESCRIPTION. Upon arrival, participants will be greeted by a research assistant, shown to an experiment room, and given an informed consent. When they are ready, they will be instructed to click a button on the screen (“>>”) to begin the experiment. Participants will then see the standard instructions per the protocol: *This experiment consists of several tasks. First, please pay close attention to the following video.* The video will then be displayed followed by instructions to click the “>>” button to continue. Time spent on this page will be recorded to insure that participants followed instructions. After the video the following text will appear on the screen: *Please read the instructions for the next task carefully. Click the “>>” button to continue* Depending on the condition different instructions are presented to the participant on the next screen. Experimental Condition: *Please describe the appearance of the bank robber in as much detail as possible. It is important that you attempt to describe all of his different facial features. It is important that you try to name them for the full 5 minutes.* In both conditions these instructions will precede an open text box for typing in the description. No next button will be available for participants to bypass this task. After 3 minutes, the computer will make a small “ding” sound and show the following text as a reminder: *Please continue with your task. It is important that you continue working for the full 5 minutes to provide as complete an answer as possible. There are two minutes left for this task.* The computer will auto-advance to the next screen when the remaining 2 minutes are completed. The next screen will display the following instruction: *Please read the instructions for the next task carefully. Click the “>>” button to continue.* The computer will then instruct the participant to remove the paper from the folder in front of them and work on the crossword puzzle: *Please remove the paper from the folder in front of you and use the full upcoming 20 minutes to complete this task. Please click the “>>” button to continue.* The next screen will display the instructions below and the lineup image with a response box for entering a number. *Please identify the individual in the lineup who you believe was the bank robber in the video you watched earlier. If you do not believe the bank robber is present please indicate “not present”. Enter your answer number in the space provided below.* The computer will auto-advance upon entering of a response to the following screen to make the confidence rating: *Please indicate your confidence in your selection from the lineup on a scale from 1 (guessing) to 7 (certain).* The next screen will provide open ended response options for several questions designed to assess participants’ awareness of experiment and the hypothesis (PARH:Rubin, Paolini, & Crisp, 2010). Open ended questions *Did you have any problems following the instructions in the experiment today?* *Did you hear anything about this research from other participants/students?* *What do you think the research was trying to show and how do you think it was trying to do this?* The PARH questionnaire will contain the following 4 statements. A participant is asked to respond to each of these statements on a 7-point scale (1 = strongly/disagree, 7 strongly agree) Scale response questions. 1. *I knew what the researchers were investigating in this research. 2. I wasn’t sure what the researchers were trying to demonstrate in this research. 3. I had a good idea about what the hypotheses were in this research. 4. I was unclear about exactly what the researchers were aiming to prove in this research.* The computer will auto-advance to a demographics screen after the response to the last question is entered. Participants will be asked to indicate their age, race, and gender on the final page.
