Description: The Elementary School Operating Status (ESOS) database provides data on school districts’ primary operating status (in person, hybrid, or remote) in the first and last grading period of the 2020-2021 school year. These data are available for 9,195 elementary school districts, covering all but the smallest school districts (i.e., those with fewer than 500 students), in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico and include about 24 million students, or 98% of all elementary students. Data in ESOS reflect operating status as of September 20-30, 2020 (wave 1) and April 20-30, 2021 (wave 2).
