This is the home of the ManyBabies1B project (MB1B). It is an offshoot of [ManyBabies1][1], so most of the details regarding methodology, timing, signing up, etc., can be found there. The primary difference between [ManyBabies1][2] and ManyBabies1B is that here we focus specifically on bilingual infants. Below are some details specific to ManyBabies1B. If your lab is interested in contributing data to this project, and you have not yet done so, please complete our expression of interest form [here][3]. MB1B participants, and those interested in participating in other multi-lab projects with bilingual infants, can sign up to our [manybabies-bilingual][4] Google Group. Research questions -------------- Some of the research questions that this project will address are: 1. How does bilingualism affect infants’ interest in IDS relative to ADS? Bilinguals' more challenge language learning environment might enhance preference for IDS at one or both ages tested. 2. How does the amount of exposure to North-American English IDS affect infants’ listening preferences? Bilinguals can help us as this question in a more nuanced way than monolinguals, as their exposure to North American English varies continuously. 3. How is bilingual infants’ listening impacted by the particular language pair being learned? Some labs will test homogeneous groups of bilinguals (all learning the same language pairs) and other labs heterogeneous groups (sharing the community language but varying in their other language). We will explore whether this affects the variability of group-level results. Contributing -------------- Participation in ManyBabies1B is open to all interested infancy researchers/laboratories with the appropriate equipment as described in [ManyBabies1][5] (Headturn Preference Procedure, Central Fixation and/or Eyetracker) and access to a bilingual infant population for testing. We welcome researchers with little or no experience in testing bilingual infants. A mentorship system is in place for those needing guidance in recruiting, assessing, and testing bilingual populations. Note that all contributors to ManyBabies1B will be expected to contribute a monolingual sample that will also be included in the main ManyBabies1 project. **Note on authorship:** Final authorship on the project will be determined based on final participation in the project via a policy that will allow authorship based on contribution of data, analytic effort, or other organizational contributions. Sample/contribution details -------------- For ManyBabies1B, the minimum contribution is N = 16 monolingual infants and N = 16 bilingual infants in one or both of the two target age bins, 6;0-9;0 months and 12;0-15;0 months. Note that we have limited data collection to a subset of the age bins from the main ManyBabies1 project. Assessing Language Input ------------------------------------------ For the purposes of this study, a bilingual infant is: - exposed to at least two languages (A and B) within the first month of life - exposed to the majority language A a minimum of 25% and maximum of 75% - exposed to a minority language B a minimum of 25% and maximum of 75% - exposure to other language(s) (C, D, etc.) is allowed. Laboratories should use a comprehensive assessment to determine percentage input (not just single-question parental report). However, laboratories are free to use their existing protocols relevant to their home bilingual communities. Mentorship and suggested protocols will be available for laboratories without experience in assessing percentage of language input, as needed. "Second Study" - Gaze Following ----------------------- Some researchers have expressed interest in adding an additional, non-linguistic task to leverage the large number of bilingual laboratories. This study would likely be beyond the scope of ManyBabies1, and would NOT be a requirement of participation in ManyBabies1B.
