I’ve long been fascinated by communication. For the 30-plus years that I’ve been an academic, I’ve been puzzled why so many smart people often write — and otherwise communicate about their research — so densely. I created this course to counteract that phenomenon. This course was designed to be conducted online (which works successfully), but it can also be conducted face-to-face (with ample outside-of-classroom time for practice). The curriculum comprises instruction and active learning assignments for improving communication in the written modality, spoken modality (talks and presentations), posters, and some of the newer forms of Internet-based scholarly communication (blogging and tweeting).
