Department of psychology was at the time established by the Philosophical Faculty of University of P. J. Šafárik in Košice in 1968. Since 2005, it has continued its activities under the name Institute of Psychology. The department was located in the building of former King Academy (1657) on Hlavná Street 67 in Košice. Its founder and long-term head was Prof. PhDr. Ján Hvozdík, DrSc. Under his supervision, the department successfully expanded its scientific and pedagogic activities until 1984. In 1984 Department of psychology was moved to Prešov. Professor Hvozdík was replaced by Doc. PhDr. Ľudmila Fábryová, CSc., who became the leader of the department. Since 1989 the department was directed by Doc. PhDr. Viliam Kubáni, CSc., and in 1990 by Doc. PhDr. Ján Ferjenčík, CSc. In the academic year 1991/92 the Department of psychology was moved back to Košice, where it was located on Moyzesova Street 50. In 1995, after Doc. PhDr. J. Ferjenčík, CSc. resigned from the position of the leader of the department, Doc. PhDr. Štefan Vendel, CSc. became the head of the department until 31st December 1998. On 1st January 1999, Doc. PhDr. Viera Bačová, CSc. became the head of the department. After the establishment of Prešov University located in Prešov, the department of psychology became a part of Philosophical Faculty in Prešov University. It was located as a field office in Košice until 30th June 1999. Since 1st September of academic year 1999/2000 the department was given premises at Prešov University and in the seat of the Faculty. In 2005, because of new organizational structure of Philosophical Faculty of Prešov University in Prešov, Department of Psychology was transformed into Institute of psychology, divided into three departments: Department of basic psychological sciences and psychological methodology, Department of clinical psychology and health psychology, Department of school psychology, consulting psychology and psychology of work. prof. PhDr. Jozef Džuka, CSc., became the director of the Institute of Psychology PF PU in Prešov; this function was also performed by doc. PhDr. Miroslav Skorodenský, CSc. and doc. PhDr. Štefan Vendel, CSc. Nowadays (since 1st September 2013), doc. Mgr. Peter Babinčák, PhD. is the head of the institute.
