Implementation Details ---------------------- This page describes how our lab implemented the procedures required by the official protocol for the RRR. It also describes and justifies any departures from that protocol. You can view the official protocl and the main project page for this RRR using these links: - Official Protocol: [https://osf.io/2h6tf/][1] - Main RRR project page: [https://osf.io/s3hfr/][2] ---------- #### Experimenters #### Bülent Aykutoğlu: Bülent Aykutoğlu is a first year doctoral student who received his MS in social psychology from Middle East Technical University in 2015. He worked as a research assistant in Social Psychology Lab in Hacettepe University from 2010 to 2012, where he gained experience administering detailed experimental protocols. He is also a member of Life-Span Developmental Lab and Self and Motivation Lab in Middle East Technical University. Elçin Gündoğdu-Aktürk: Elçin Gündoğdu-Aktürk is a PhD candidate who received his MS in social psychology from Middle East Technical University in 2010. She has experience in collecting diary data from romantically involved heterosexual dyads and same-sex friend dyads. Ahmet Uysal: Dr. Uysal received his PhD from University of Houston in 2010. His research interests consist of Self-determination theory, self-concept, strategic and defensive self processes, and psychology in game design. Dr. Uysal is currently the director of the Self and Motivation Lab in Middle East Technical University and has extensive experience conducting experimental laboratory studies. All researchers will follow a step-by-step procedure prepared in accordance with the materials and description of the original study. Trials will be conducted with other lab members serving as participants to ensure familiarity with the procedure. In order to ensure researchers' blindness to the conditions, the cover page for the manipulation will face upwards. ---------- #### Setting/Lab/Equipment #### For data collection, We will use the facilities of 'Self and Motivation Lab'. There is a room with two desks with computers (HP Envy with a i7 processor and 24' flat screen), and a larger round table (Please see Lab Angle 1 and Lab Angle 2 photos). There is also a waiting area where we can greet participants (Please see Waiting Area photo). ---------- #### Sample, subjects, and randomization #### **Target sample size:** 110 participants **Target sample demographics:** We will recruit participants via SONA system from undergraduate students who take psychology classes. They will be compensated with SONA credit for their classes. The anticipated demographic group will be Turkish individuals within the range between 18 to 24 ages. Since majority of psychology students in Turkey is female, we expect that the percentage of females in our sample will be between %60 and %70. **Minimum sample size after exclusions:** 100 participants (50 per condition) **Stopping rule(s):** We will continue to collect data until we reach our target sample size (110 participants). When we reach this quota, we will not schedule any new participants. However, if we have any participant who has a previously-scheduled appointment, we will run the experiment and include their data in our analysis. We anticipate that total number of data will exceed the minimum sample size (100 participants) after the exclusions until the end of December. **Randomization to conditions:** The official protocol gives explicit directions for how to randomly assign participants to conditions, and the main project page for this RRR provides an R script that all labs will use to generate these random condition assignments. **Blinding to conditions:** Presence of other conditions will not be mentioned to the participants and they will not be able to see other participants' responses. **Exclusion rules:** The same exclusion rules required by the official protocol will be used. ---------- #### Software/Code #### We will be using the provided materials, and we verify that they work in our lab. ---------- #### Differences from the official protocol #### In order to ensure participants' understanding of the protocol and materials, we translated the materials of the study. (Please see Translation Files). To verify the accuracy of the translation, the materials translated into Turkish by Bülent Aykutoğlu and Elçin Gündoğdu-Aktürk were back-translated into English by Dr. Ahmet Uysal and Dr. Pınar Bıçaksız who are at advanced level in professional English.
