A Spell Out theory of adjunct islands

This talk provides new evidence in favor of the configurational view of the Adjunct Condition, which relies on the structural complement vs. adjunct distinction, rather than the semantic one (modifier vs. non-modifier). The evidence comes from Balkar (dialect of Karachay-Balkar, Turkic). This work also provides an argument for Bare Phrase Structure (Chomsky 1994), because only in this framework the complement vs. adjunct distinction is separate from the modifier vs. non-modifier one.
