Implementation Details ---------------------- This page describes how our lab implemented the procedures required by the official protocol for the RRR. It also describes and justifies any additions to or departures from that protocol. You can view the official protocol and the main project page for this RRR using these links: - Official Protocol: [https://osf.io/6wvj4/][1] - Main RRR project page: [https://osf.io/hgi2y/][2] - Project page with all materials: [https://osf.io/pkd65/][3] ---------- #### Experimenters #### **Kevin Holmes, Colorado College:** Kevin Holmes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Colorado College, holds a Ph.D. from Emory University and completed postdoctoral training at UC Berkeley, and has published on the role of the body in mental representations of space and quantity. **Tomi-Ann Roberts, Colorado College:** Tomi-Ann Roberts is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Colorado College, holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, and has published extensively on the social psychology of emotion, gender, and the body. **Julia Liao, Colorado College:** Julia Liao graduated from Colorado College with a B.A. in Psychology, and has previously conducted research on the effects of place attachment, message framing, and different types of self-perceptions on pro-environmental behaviors and attitudes. ---------- #### Setting/Lab/Equipment #### Participants will be tested individually in a private cubicle. Instructions will be delivered on a Dell Windows 7 PC and participants will be recorded using a Logitech C310 HD Webcam. Pictures of the cubicle setup, including a close-up of the desk setup, are included in our Files. Note that the video camera will be affixed to the desk between the two speakers. Our Files also include an image of a video recording taken by the camera when placed in that position, to demonstrate that it allows us to record the participant's mouth and ensure that he/she is holding the pen correctly. During the experiment, we will also place a box of tissues and a box of alcohol swabs on the upper right hand corner of the desk for participant use. For the experimental tasks, participants will use the Pentel Sign Pen, a non-odor fiber-tipped pen very similar to the Stabilo 68. We have confirmed that this pen writes smoothly and easily when held in the mouth using either grip. During the time that each participant is completing the experiment, the experimenter will leave the cubicle and close the door. The experimenter will remain in the hallway outside the cubicle to ensure availability if the participant has questions during the experiment. ---------- #### Sample, subjects, and randomization #### **Target sample size:** We aim to test 150 participants in total. **Target sample demographics:** Participants will be recruited from the undergraduate student body of Colorado College. Participants will include non-Psychology and non-Neuroscience students, as well as Introductory Psychology students who have not yet learned about the facial feedback hypothesis. Each participant will be compensated with $5 in cash for his/her participation. We anticipate that all participants will be undergraduate students between the ages of 18 to 22 years old and that our participant pool will have a close to even gender distribution. **Minimum sample size after exclusions:** Our minimum sample size after exclusions will be 100 (50 participants per condition). **Stopping rule(s):** We will stop collecting data when we have tested 150 participants in total. We do not anticipate that more than 1/3 of our total sample will meet exclusion criteria; therefore, a total sample size of 150 should allow us to meet the minimum sample size requirements of the protocol. In the event that we need additional participants after reaching our stopping point, we will continue to recruit and test participants by assigning them to conditions pseudorandomly as described below. **Randomization to conditions:** Participants will be assigned to conditions pseudorandomly by assigning every other participant to each condition. If we need to test additional participants, we will continue to use pseudorandom assignment to conditions until the minimum sample size is met. **Blinding to conditions:** Each participant will complete the experiment individually inside a private cubicle. We will debrief all participants via email following the conclusion of data collection, rather than debriefing each participant individually after he/she completes the study. **Exclusion rules:** We will use the exclusion criteria from the official protocol. An experimenter will review video and code an exclusion decision for each participant before reviewing or coding any of that participant's other data. ---------- #### Software/Code #### We will use the provided materials and have confirmed that all materials, including videos and PowerPoint presentations, work on our cubicle computer. ---------- #### Differences from the official protocol #### **Additional Questionnaire Items:** We will add several items to the final questionnaire that participants complete after Task 3. These items are intended to help us assess possible confounds and to provide further information on participants' experiences while completing the experimental task. Because these additional items appear on the final questionnaire at the end of the study (i.e., after all primary experimental tasks have been completed), they should not affect any of the primary tasks or measures. Below is a list of the additional items (our Files also include the edited version of the final questionnaire with these items added): 1) How aware were you of the way your face would appear to others when holding the pen in the correct position? [Answered on a 10-pt scale from 0 (not at all) to 9 (a great deal)] 2) How do you feel about the way your face would appear to others when holding the pen in the correct position? [Answered on a 9-pt scale from -4 (very negatively) to 4 (very positively), with 0 being neutral] 3) To what extent do you feel holding the pen in the correct position affected your performance on the tasks? [Answered on a 10-pt scale from 0 (not at all) to 9 (a great deal)] 4) How do you think holding the pen in the correct position affected your performance on the tasks? [Answered on a 9-pt scale from -4 (hurt my performance) to 4 (helped my performance), with 0 being no impact on performance] 5) In your everyday life, how often does your mouth form the same shape as when you held the pen in the correct position? [Answered on a 10-pt scale from 0 (never) to 9 (all the time)] 6) How much physical discomfort did you feel when holding the pen in the correct position? [Answered on a 10-pt scale from 0 (not at all) to 9 (a great deal)] **Information Brochure Modifications:** Our IRB requires us to make several modifications to the provided Information Brochure. Specifically, we have added a Risks & Benefits paragraph specifying the following: "You will not be asked to perform any physically strenuous tasks. However, because the tasks require you to use parts of your body that you would not normally use for such tasks, some of the tasks may be slightly uncomfortable. You will be compensated $5 for your participation in this study. In addition, the findings of this experiment will make a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge regarding our research question. If you choose, you may contact the responsible researcher after the conclusion of the study to learn more about these findings." We have also added several sentences to the Confidentiality & Voluntariness paragraphs, to specify that data will be stored in a locked office and on password-protected computer accounts, that choosing to withdraw participation at any time will have no consequences for the participant, and that participating in the study does not negate any of the participant's legal rights.
