This page outlines the procedure for the two studies. Two hundred undergraduate students from Carleton University will be recruited for this online study using the experiment management system of the Department of Psychology and will be awarded 0.25% toward their PSYC 1001/1002/2001/2002 or NEUR 2001/2002 class, as their participation will last no more than 30 minutes. Individuals that respond to the announcement for recruiting will have access to a survey link that will direct them to the online study on Qualtrics. Participants will read an informed consent form and indicate whether they consent or withdraw. The study will be titled “Attitudes and Cognition” and participants will be informed that the research is interested in how a cognitive task is related to people’s attitudes. After indicating their consent to participate, participants will be randomly assigned to the money condition or the control condition. Both groups will be asked to complete a sentence descrambling task that involves writing logical sentences using four out of five words in each set. Half of the sets in the sentence descrambling task in the money priming condition are related to the concept of money. In contrast, none of the sets in the sentence descrambling task in the control condition are related to money. This exact manipulation was used in Vohs, Mead, and Goode (2006) and has been shown in their pilot study to implicitly activate the concept of money. After completing the descrambling task, participants will complete a modified version of the willingness to perform sustainable behaviours measure that was developed and used in Ferguson, Branscombe, and Reynolds (2011). Items in this measure that explicitly include references to money-related concepts will be removed (e.g., items about support for taxes). In order to measure people’s self-interest and concern for others, participants will be asked to complete the Social Values Orientation Slider Measure (Murphy, Ackermann, & Handgraaf, 2011). Participants will also be asked to complete an adapted version of the Inclusion of Others in Self Scale (Aron, Aron, & Smollan, 1992) in order to assess how close they feel to others. Similar items that ask how interconnected they are with society, family, community, friends, were added to this scale as well. These latter two measures will be counterbalanced in order to minimize any order effects. Participants will be asked to complete a brief demographics questionnaire and then indicate what they thought the study was about in order to assess whether there were any demand characteristics in the study. Finally, participants will be directed to the debriefing form which will tell them more about the purpose of the study. **UPDATE:** A community sample of 200 individuals from the United States will also be recruited through MTurk, which is an online tool that allows “workers” to complete small tasks for monetary rewards. MTurk has increasingly become a useful and convenient participant-recruitment tool for psychological researchers (see Paolacci, Chandler, & Ipeirotis, 2010). Participants will be compensated with $1.00 for their participation in a 30 minute survey. This payment is considerably higher than the median reservation wage of $1.38/hour that has been noted in previous research (Horton & Chilton, 2010).
