Wiki Version:
The study was conducted using an online questionnaire. The questionnaire asked participants about their interest in watching live broadcasts of sporting events on television, whether or not they watched five or more live sporting events on television during the previous 12 months, and multiple follow-up questions about sports. Each participant was randomly assigned to either a not forewarned condition or a forewarned condition. The condition determined what information, if any, a participant read after answering the question about interest in watching live sporting events on television and before reporting if they watched five or more live sporting events on television during the previous 12 months. Participants assigned to a not forewarned condition did not read any information between the two questions. Participants in a forewarned condition read the following: If you answer the next question by saying you have watched five or more live sporting events on television during the past 12 months, you will be asked 20 more questions about sports. If you say you have not watched five or more live sporting events on television during the past 12 months, you will not be asked any more questions about sports. After the manipulation, all participants answered the following question: During the past 12 months, since [CURRENT DATE – 12 MONTHS], did you watch five or more live sporting events on television, or did you not do that? [unnumbered randomly ordered 1=Did watch five or more/0=Did not watch five or more] Every participant who reported watching five or more events then answered 20 follow-up questions about sports. Every participant who reported not watching five or more events did not answer any follow-up questions about sports [see Files].
