**Open environmental archaeology means sustainable environmental archaeology** In this talk, I set out the differences between using open science methods and having an open science approach and how this open approach leads to sustainable scientific research. I then went on to discuss where environmental archaeology is now and where we need to go to become open and therefore more sustainable researchers.
