Sample 3 is the sample reported on by Wessel, Wetzels, Jelicic & Merckelbach (2005). The procedure and materials of the TNT task used in experiment 1 were used, with the following differences:
- We dropped the 8-repetitions condition, rendering 6 wordsets that were rotated across 6 versions (A - F).
- In the TNT phase, respond trials were denoted by cue words presented in green font. The suppress trials were indicated by cue words in red font.
- The instructions contained an explicit reference to the paradoxical effects of thought suppression.
The instructions are in Dutch. The task was run in ERTS. The program filenames ending with a number denote the different phases of the procedure and the names ending with a letter (a,b,c...) denote wordlist versions.
The aim of the experiment was to examine differences in suppression between participants who scored high and low on a measure of dissociative tendencies (Dissociative Experiences Scale; DES). During the experiment participants completed the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Time of testing had been varied, yet had not been included as a factor in the analyses reported in Wessel et al. (2005).
