Description: On September 14–15, 2023, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) held a two-day workshop that convened experts on observational studies in epidemic settings including epidemiologists, clinical standards developers, ethicists, legal experts, social scientists, and data end users. The workshop goals were to 1) identify and prioritize new and persistent challenges affecting observational studies at different stages of the research pipeline (before, during, and following a study); 2) discuss recommendations to standardize and improve observational studies in epidemic settings; and 3) produce a list of immediate, actionable as well as long-term measures to address these issues.
