The pretest for social comparison was derived from Mussweiler and Strack (2000). A copy of the article can be found here.
A note from Dr. Förster:
"For the comparison task (Steffi Graf, Robbie Williams) you would probably need to design new material. The material only works if 1) people know these people 2) and if they know the standard with respect to alcohol consume. I am afraid that they have to pretest material to find a person who is a high versus a low standard regarding alcohol consume. Robbie Williams, i am afraid is also not good any more for the reason that he is now "clean" I heard (well, I am not sure, I do not read these magazineI). In any event, I think the material needs to be adjusted. So I am sending the Navon, priming task, the comparison, the hypothesis testing and the right-handedness."
A note from Dr. Liberman:
1. I WOULD WORRY ABOUT PRETESTING THE MEASURES AND PROCEDURES CAREFULLY BECAUSE THEY APPEAR VERY TIME- AND CULTURE-BOUND. Specifically, the figures that count as moderate and as extreme standards of high athletic ability and of low athletic ability probably changed and probably need to be tested anew in the place where you are going to run the studies. In any event, I would include a question at the end of your studies asking whether the Ps know the figures, and would exclude anybody who does not.
2. There are two mediation analyses in the studies, with two different Sobel values. Probably it does not matter than much. I am not sure how you compute power of mediation for replication purposes but I trust you and your stats advisors. My worry is that mediation is conducted AFTER the effect of the IV on the mediator and the DV and the effect of the mediator on the DV are found. But if you want to replicate mediation, it means you need to replicate these three effects AND mediation, so basically you need enough power to find the conjunction of all these effects. Just a thought, I assume that you and the stats experts are aware of all this.
3. I would lookup other line-bisection studies to see if anything can be learned about how to administer this task. Perhaps more knowledge cumulated since 2008 (or more precisely since the study was conducted). I am talking about minute details that are not specified in the paper, like how distant are the participants from the line, whether they are required to wear glasses if they have them, whether vision tests are made to make sure that the two eyes are equally strong etc. In other words, in this respect I would not stick to exact replication if a better way of conducting the procedure has been found since.*No wiki content.*
