Wiki Version:
**Primary Measures** The primary outcomes of this study involve changes in perceptions of relationship intimacy and passion, secondary measures include sexual communication, as well as sexual and relationship satisfaction. Baseline measures of these variables will be collected in 5 diary assessments, conducted every 2-3 days during the first two weeks of the study. Post-intervention measures will be collected in a similar manner over the last two weeks of the study. Items assessing these outcomes can be found in the attached file "SBRQ - Diary Assessment.docx," which also contains items to assess proposed mediators (e.g. frequency of sexual behavior, pleasure, perceptions of novelty). **Intended Sample Size** 300 (150 couples) While pilot research has shown that most couples follow through with simple requests to incorporate a vibrator in their sex lives, the length and complexity of this study is likely to incur some participant attrition. Assuming 20% attrition, the study will retain roughly 40 couples per experimental condition. With 5 repeated measures per participant within each dyad, as well as baseline covariates, the study will have adequate power to detect small differences between treatment groups. **Analytic Plan** Changes in the primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed using a 2-level mixed-linear model for repeated measures. In this model, post-intervention repeated measures will be crossed with individual couple members (level 1) who are nested in romantic dyads (level 2). As intact dyads are assigned to treatment conditions, the effects of the intervention will be tested as level 2 treatment factor. This analysis will also enter pre-intervention outcome measures as level 1 covariates so that the tests of treatment differences control for baseline differences on the outcomes. This method is somewhat analogous to ANCOVA for pre-post designs. Proposed moderators (erotophilia, previous experience with sexual novelty, etc), will also be tested by exploring interactions between level 1 covariates and the level 2 treatment factor. Although no gender differences are expected, if the primary outcomes support the hypotheses, the relationship between proposed mediators (perceived novelty, pleasure, etc.) and outcomes will also be explored within dyadic actor-partner models which consider unique contributions from each gender.
