Although The Internet was invented to help scientists communicate with
each other, the publishing industry that controls how scientists share and
get credit for their work has failed to embrace the myriad opportunities
presented by the Internet to make the process more fair, effective and
efficient. However, with the rise of author-driven publication (e.g.
preprints) there is renewed optimism that things are finally about to
change. In my talk I will discuss why the publishing system is the way it
is, why it is so important that we fix it, and what the future should and -
if we are successful - will look like, and what forces we are fighting
against to make it happen.
