This repository contains all data, experimental scripts, and analysis scripts for the experiment reported in: Bouwer, F. L., Honing, H., & Slagter, H. A. (In press). Beat-based and memory-based temporal expectations in rhythm: similar perceptual effects, different underlying mechanisms. *Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience*. doi: 10.1162/jocn_a_01529 Note: the paper is also available as a preprint on BioRxiv, see [here](https://doi.org/10.1101/613398) If you would like to use these data in your own work, please cite both the data (from this repository), and the JOCN paper. The experiment was run in [Presentation](www.neurobs.com). The analyses were performed using Matlab, SPSS, R, and the EEGLAB and FIELDTRIP toolboxes in Matlab. # Content ## Experiment scripts All scripts and sound files to run this experiment in Presentation, for both the behavioral and EEG experiment. ## Raw data Behavioural data can be found in 2 folders (1 for each experiment), and has the filenames “[PP number]-2-Rhythm task, full experiment, incl BAT.log” and “[PP number]-3-Attended Rhythm Task”. Variable names relevant to the analysis are: - Subject: Participant number - Event Type: type of event (Sound or Response) - Code: here, only single numbers are relevant and indicate responses on the button box or space (4 to 10) - type(str): 0 for on-beat standard sound, 1 for off-beat standard sound, 2 for on-beat target, 3 for off-beat target, 4 for on-beat target in a position not used for the analysis, 5 for off-beat target in a position not used for the analysis (additional numbers are not relevant to the analysis of the experiment) - ioi(str): interval following this sound in ms - beat(str): 0 for on-beat sound, 1 for off-beat sound - intervalpre(str): indicates the symbolic interval preceding the current sound (1 and 3 are used for the analysis) - condi(str): "aperi" for aperiodic, “peri” for periodic, “pred" for predictable, "unpred" for unpredictable - Time: time in tenth of ms from the start of the experiment - Stim Type: easy way of coupling responses to targets (indicates hit, miss, or false alarm) EEG data is in the Raw EEG data folder. - There are 2 files for each participant (att for attended and unatt for unattended). - Participants 302 and 319 have 3 files, as they took a break in the attended experiment. The trigger codes of interest are 11-18 and 31-38. - The first number denotes the previous interval (in integer ratio connotation). Only intervals 1 and 3 were used for the analysis. - The second number denotes the condition: 1. Periodic, predictable, beat 2. Aperiodic, predictable, beat 3. Periodic, unpredictable, beat 4. Aperiodic, unpredictable, beat 5. Periodic, predictable, offbeat 6. Aperiodic, predictable, offbeat 7. Periodic, unpredictable, offbeat 8. Aperiodic, unpredictable, offbeat ## Data analysis ### Behavioral - logfile2SPSS (for behavioral and behavioral_from_EEG): a Matlab script to extract the relevant data from the raw Presentation logfiles and convert this into .txt files to be read by SPSS - Clean behavioral data.sps: the SPPS script for outlier removal and cleaning up and formatting of the data (input: the .txt files generated by the .m file described above) - ANOVA Results behavioral data.sps: the SPSS script for the ANOVA analyses of hitrates and reaction times - All .sav files are the final preprocessed data used for the analyses ### EEG To repeat the analysis, you first run Shared_preprocessing.m, and subsequently ERPs.m and Cluster_based_stats.m, all in the Scripts folder. This generates pre-processed data, and runs the cluster-based tests. The other statistical tests can be run by using the ANOVA results EEG data file (SPSS syntax). The Bayesian Results files show the results from the analysis in JASP. The Data folder contains the preprocessed data used for the statistical analyses and plots: - all “stats.mat” files contain general variables of interest, such as the original filenames, samplerate, conditions used etc. - the other .mat files contain the ERPs for all conditions, grand averages, and the results of the permutation test, see the scripts for more info - the .txt files contain the amplitudes extracted from the ERPs for analysis in SPSS - the .sav files contain the final data as used in SPSS for the ANOVA analysis ### Plotting - Figures 2 and 5 were generated with the R scripts. - Figures 4, and 6-9 (ERPs) were generated with the Matlab script. - Figures 3, and 6-8 (single participant data) were generated with the SPSS script.
