Discourse processing has been argued to be aided by expectations
generated from various sources, but previous studies have only
investigated individual expectation-generating cues. In the current
study, we investigate how both isolated and combined discourse signals
affect comprehenders' on-line processing of discourse relations in
German and English. We find that strong lexical cues facilitated
processing in both languages, while global contextual cues further
reduced processing times only in German. When combined, the two types of
cues exerted independent effects. Rating data additionally suggests a
preference for contextual cueing in both languages, but a dispreference
for additional lexical signals in English.
