Open-source autosampler for elemental analysis of solid samples

Elemental analysis is a very popular analytical method, being employed for diverse scientific fields. Most elemental analyzers are equipped with an autosampler, by means of which solid samples are dispensed inside a reactor where chemical reactions take place and the produced gases are carried to a detector, where the amounts of selected elements are quantified. Here we present an autosampler for elemental analysis of solid samples. The autosampler consists of 1) a sampling table, on which a carousel pushes samples inside an orifice, and 2) a purging pipe, placed directly beneath the orifice, where the sample is purged off surrounding air, and then delivered to the reaction tube. Air contamination, an issue for the analysis of some elements like nitrogen and oxygen, was negligible, and results for elemental and isotopic composition of nitrogen and carbon were inside specs. The autosampler can be easily integrated with any elemental analyzer from any manufacturer by means of AutoIt, a scripting language for the Windows Operating System.
