*Abstract* What do people in poverty need? This symposium explores the psychology underlying the effectiveness of aid and cash transfers to help people living in poverty around the world. Across novel samples, we describe how cash transfers improve material outcomes, and we highlight how time-poverty and other psychological needs are critical—yet overlooked—avenues to improving psychological well-being.
