On this page videos of the study and the procedure can be found. We aimed for a close replication and followed the procedures of Griskevicius et al. (2010). As in the original study, participants completed the survey on computers in separate laboratory cubicles. The prominent difference between the original study and this replication study was the procedure used for the pretest: In the original study of Griskevicius et al. (2010), a pretest with a separate group of participants was conducted before Study 1. This pretest contained questions regarding the perception of people buying the car, household cleaner and dishwasher. Results showed that people buying green products were rated as being nicer, more caring and more altruistic than people buying their non-green counterparts. For this replication study it was not possible for the researchers to conduct the pretest with a separate group of participants. Therefore, the Dutch pretest questions were presented after Study 1. As such, participants first completed Study 1, then answered the pretest questions. However, participants completed a suite of unrelated studies before the replication, and our pretest remained independent of our experiment. Since participants consisted of Dutch students from Tilburg University, all materials were translated into Dutch and can be found on the Materials Replication Study page (‘Going Green Study (Pretest) Materials’).
