Poster Session A (Thursday 12:10-2PM) We are happy to answer questions via email (fd252@cornell.edu) if you cannot attend the poster session. During the poster session, we will be answering questions via OSF comments and Zoom (link: https://cornell.zoom.us/j/293895747, meeting ID: 293-895-747). Abstract: Garden path sentences highlight the role of preceding linguistic context in parsing. Readers experience confusion known as a garden path effect (GPE) during the incremental processing of these constructions. Human GPEs can be alleviated by changing the discourse context to accommodate conversational implicatures of the RC. In this work, we simulate this experimental work with RNNs, showing that similar discourse factors mitigate RNN GPEs. Our results point to two alternatives: 1) garden path alleviation may not be evidence of the use of event knowledge in humans, or 2) aspects of pragmatic reasoning are learnable from just language data.
