Poster session B, B7 (Friday 12:10-2:00)
How do people compute which objects are tall? We suggest that when confronted with different sets of new objects that vary in ways other than mean, median, or maximum height, speakers use percentages of objects to set the threshold of tallness. The results of three experiments show that (1) the presence of a discontinuity in height affects participants' choice of threshold and (2) participants prefer thresholds that ensure about 25% of objects are categorized as tall. We suggest that this preference is best explained by the goal of minimizing the mis-categorization of an object as tall/not-tall.
