Description: The present study investigates the relationship between polite behavior and floor control in question and answer sessions. In two videotaped conferences, question askers who initially displayed polite behavior asked more and longer questions than askers who did not. By indirectly establishing their credentials as respectful of social expectations, askers may then feel licensed to occupy the floor.
