Wiki Version:
1. Description This archive contains the program packages of the CROWN game for Singaporean variety of Mandarin (Open Sesame Python 2.7 version) The CROWN game is a categorical perception task for phonemes. In the Mandarin version, we use the phoneme pair /b/-/p/. The task was narrated as a game for the participants to help a little monkey to pick up flowers to make a flower crown, by finishing the task block by block. Scenarios were used in different versions of the task: - Mandarin_CROWN_Game_s1: You can help the little monkey play a game with the big monkey in which they do one of two actions (“touch the big monkey’s *nose*” or “touch the big monkey’s *skin*”). - Mandarin_CROWN_Game_s2: You can help the little monkey searching for bananas through your sense of smell (the *nose*) and the little monkey needs to pick up trash after eating the banana (the *peel*). This archive includes 5 versions: - CROWN_MDR.osexp: offline version the Mandarin CROWN game with 16 tokens x 10 blocks, estimated completing time 10-12 mins (using scenario 1). - CROWN_MDR_full_offline.osexp: offline version of the Mandarin CROWN game with 16 tokens x 10 blocks, estimated completing time 10-12 mins (using scenario 2). - CROWN_MDR_full_online.osexp: online version of the Mandarin CROWN game with 16 tokens x 10 blocks, estimated completing time 10-12 mins (using scenario 2). - CROWN_MDR_half_offline.osexp: offline version of the Mandarin CROWN game with 8 tokens x 10 blocks, estimated completing time 5-6 mins (using scenario 2). - CROWN_MDR_half_online.osexp: online version of the Mandarin CROWN game with 8 tokens x 10 blocks, estimated completing time 5-6 mins (using scenario 2). All the packages archived here include the task program and all the image and audio files. The task was programmed in Opensesame. The audio stimuli includes 16 tokens(8 tokens in half versions) generated from a VOT continuum from -60ms to +90ms. The audio stimuli were produced by a female bilingual native speaker of Singapore English and Singapore Mandarin. 2. Installation and platforms The offline versions of the program were developed on Opensesame 3.2 (python version 2.7). You can run them on both Opensesame 3.2 and 3.3 with python 2.7. Other version of python with Opensesame has not been tested. The online versions of the program were developed with the OSWEB extention on opensesame 3.2 (python version 2.7). The packages were exported JATOS studies. See here for runnning opensesame on JATOS online: https://osdoc.cogsci.nl/3.2/manual/osweb/#jatos 3. Data A csv file will be generated automatically after the experiment. Data includes the choice made by the participant and their reaction time. R scripts is also included in the archive for extracting and generating useful variables from the raw data for further analysis. 4. Acknowledgments We would like to thank Fei Ting Woon and Eshwaaree C. Yogarrajah for assistance with audio recordings. Contact: Lei Pan E-mail address: panl0006@e.ntu.edu.sg
