Description: Bowden and Jung-Beeman (2003) developed the compound remote associates test based on the remote associates test of Mednick (1962). Participants are presented with three cue words (man/star/glue) in the compound remote associates test and have to search for a fourth compound solution word (superman/superstar/super glue). The adjustments made to the original remote associates test was to increase the number of word puzzles and to provide a more consistent relationship between the solution and the cue words. Namely, the solution and cue words always formed a compound solution word or phrase. These types of word puzzles are generally used in the field of creativity research. More specifically, in research aimed at elucidating the cognitive underpinnings and the phenomenology of the Aha experience, also termed insight. In general, the classification of solved word puzzles into those solved with insight and non-insight (the mundane analytical problem-solving approach) is based on participants their self-reports. To study the insight experience, we developed a Dutch version of the compound remote associates test based on the English version (144 word puzzles; Bowden & Jung-Beeman, 2003) and the German version (130 word puzzles; Landmann et al., 2014). Based on pilot studies and two independent raters' ratings, we retained 75 word puzzles. If you use this Dutch translation of the CRAT for your own research, we would greatly appreciate it if you would cite the relevant reference describing this Dutch version (i.e., Stuyck, Aben, Cleeremans, & Van den Bussche, 2020).
