Short abstract:
We investigate asymmetrical Voice Mismatch effects in VP ellipsis, in which Passive-Active mismatches (John was praised by Mary, and Sue did, too) are reportedly tolerated better than Active-Passive ones. We propose that Passive forms passively activate form-identical lexical representations for Active forms, creating the illusion of a matching antecedent. We make the novel prediction that Passives with morphologically distinct forms from Actives (was driven~drove) do not activate Active counterparts, and are thus less susceptible to interference from lexical competition than those with identical forms (was found~found). A speeded 2AFC acceptability study confirms our predictions.
