Please sign onto Zoom Thursday to discuss! https://ucla.zoom.us/j/676803189 Meeting ID: 676 803 189 **Short abstract:** We investigate asymmetrical Voice Mismatch effects in VP ellipsis, in which Passive-Active mismatches (*John was praised by Mary, and Sue did, too*) are reportedly tolerated better than Active-Passive ones. We propose that Passive forms passively activate form-identical lexical representations for Active forms, creating the illusion of a matching antecedent. We make the novel prediction that Passives with morphologically distinct forms from Actives (*was driven~drove*) do not activate Active counterparts, and are thus less susceptible to interference from lexical competition than those with identical forms (*was found~found*). A speeded 2AFC acceptability study confirms our predictions.
