The phenomenon of incomplete neutralization has sometimes been used as evidence against traditional formal phonology. However, since linguistic gradience is a multi-factorial issue, meaning that factors from both inside and outside grammatical knowledge can cause gradience in the phonetics, such way of using phonetics to directly infer phonology is problematic. This study further supports this stance by showing that in Huai'an Mandarin, phonetically identical derived tones can have different phonological behaviors.
