Who is a racist? It depends on how and whom you ask. The present research draws from research on feature centrality to understand how people determine whether someone is a racist. Participants took an online survey assessing their tendency to label a person as racist based on certain beliefs or actions on the research website, Project Implicit (implicit.harvard.edu). The beliefs or actions assessed cover a multitude of subjects, ranging from directly racist beliefs or actions (i.e., participation in KKK rallies), to more indirect, ambiguously racist ones (i.e., voting behavior). We also examined how participants’ own attitudes and identities (e.g., race, political identity) were related to mental representations of racists.
