Description: This preregistration outlines proposed research on the electoral repercussions of a recent political scandal in Germany, where several MPs of the large government coalition party, CDU/CSU, became publicly known to have been implicated in corrupt behavior, damaging the whole CDU/CSU party brand. Leveraging that the scandal became suddenly known to voters, immediately before state-level and local elections in three German states, we propose to estimate the causal effect of scandal revelation on political support on the aggregate level (differentiating trends in pre-scandal postal and post-scandal urn voting) and individual level (drawing on an unexpected event during survey design). This preregistration is written before the authors can obtain access to the (as of writing) unpublished data sources.
