Wiki Version:
Mouth cancer, "oral cancer" or "oral cancer", found in the literature as squamous cell carcinoma, epidermoid carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, is one of the most common types of malignant disease worldwide, accounting for 95% of all forms of head and neck cancer. Early detection and consequent actions taken at early stages of the disease lead to a decrease in mortality, morbidity and mutilation, resulting from the evolution of the disease and its treatment, as well as increased survival rates. Telemedicine has been seen as an important tool for facing the contemporary challenges of universal health systems. Its concept, in a broad sense, can be defined as the use of information and communication technologies in health, enabling the offer of services related to health care (expansion of care and coverage). Telecare operates in the field of knowledge that is part of Telehealth, and is subdivided into telediagnosis and teleconsulting. Both assist the professional in decision making, diagnosis, management and patient management. Despite the suggestive names, these procedures work on the basis of interprofessional communication. That is, from one health professional to another, and they differ from each other. Telemediagnosis allows medical exams and/or images to be sent to a Telehealth Center or Platform, in order to issue a report through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Therefore, there is an exchange (upload) of files, images and complementary exams, that will be analyzed by the specialist, aiming at the diagnosis, especially of lesions in the oral and maxillofacial complex, in order to reduce the need for face-to-face consultations. Teleconsulting constitutes a system of questions and answers among professionals, based on scientific evidence, to clarify doubts about clinical pictures and procedures. There is guidance by the specialist, based on the information provided in the patient's clinical file and on the findings of the professional who assists the patient in person. Given the need to deepen the knowledge about the modality of teleassistance in the early diagnosis of oral malignancies through ICTs, and how these tools can benefit populations, the aim of this review is to map the scientific scenario about telediagnosis and teleconsulting as aids in the early diagnosis of oral cancer.
