Wiki Version:
The study reported analyses from seven samples which are included in separate tabs in the excel file. The names of the data sets in the Excel file are the same as in the paper. The data sets were gathered over a period of several years, and so there is some variability in the order of the variables and the variable names. The data are structured for use in the computer program SOREMO. The variable names refer to construct names as follows: PSS = perceived social support, PA = positive affect and NA = negative affect. The variable name for perceived quality of ordinary conversation varies from tab to tab and is indicated as CONVQ, OrdCon or CONV. Note that the order of the variables differs somewhat from tab to tab. Sometimes PSS is first and sometimes OrdCon is first. Each tab also designates which recipient rated which provider. For example, in Coworkers 1, row 4 shows Recipient 1’s ratings of Provider 2. The scores are 3.63 for perceived support, 3.25 for perceived quality of ordinary conversation, 3.75 for positive affect and 1.17 for negative affect. In this tab, recipients and providers are indicated by separate columns. In other tabs, recipient and provider designations are contained in the same column. For example, in Apartment Mates 1, the value of 12 under “Recipient/Provider” indicates that recipient 1 rated provider 2. Tabs also include various additional information which were not part of the analyses. For example, Apartment mates 1 also includes the original group numbers, groups numbered continuously, and a sequence of 16 values that were used a place keeper. In addition, there are three tabs that include participants’ responses to the conversation preferences measure described in the paper. Each tab includes the description of the item (e.g., soccer) the group number, as well as the participant number within groups. For example, in Conversation Preferences AM2, column C shows the ratings on all items for participant 3 within group 12.
