Description: This “How I Made This” presentation look at building small-scale community dialogues and relationships through our Instagram account, Feminists Do Media (@aesthetic.resistance). The account is a practice-based research project that interveness into prevailing Instagram culture. What we hope to discuss is how this project was designed with the intent of co-opting the functions of Instagram –– as a queer feminist Instagram hack. The account amplifies voices from LGBTQ2IA+, BIPOC, and other marginalized communities and pushes against the colonial capitalist heteropatriarchy. It is also a digital database of feminist historical and contemporary media practices, and current digital hashtag activist movements. We will discuss how we built our Instagram account as a space to cultivate digital methodologies and tools of feminist and queer resistance. We will outline our processes of data and content production, analysis, and remediation and illustrate how we leverage different digital media tactics to intervene into harmful, normative digital cultures in order to generate new conceptual paradigms.
