Implementation Details ---------------------- This page describes how our lab implemented the procedures required by the official protocol for the RRR. It also describes and justifies any additions to or departures from that protocol. You can view the official protocl and the main project page for this RRR using these links: - Official Protocol: [https://osf.io/6wvj4/][1] - Main RRR project page: [https://osf.io/hgi2y/][2] - Project page with all materials: [https://osf.io/pkd65/][3] ---------- #### Experimenters #### The primary researcher was responsible for all data collection. ---------- #### Setting/Lab/Equipment #### The research was conducted in the Cognition Lab. For this particular study, two stations were set-up on opposite sides of the lab. Each station consisted of a laptop, a tripod with video camera, a box of tissues, and laminated copies of the research description and debriefing statements from the official protocol. ---------- #### Sample, subjects, and randomization #### **Target sample size:** The total sample size was 116. **Target sample demographics:** General Psychology students (Md age = 19) volunteered to participate in the study through an experiment management website associated with the course. The online description of the study was taken directly from the official protocol. All volunteers received research credit for their participation. **Minimum sample size after exclusions:** After the exclusion rules were applied, 50 participants were included in each condition. **Stopping rule(s):** An initial analysis of the variables tied to the exclusion rules was conducted after 100 participants completed the experiment. Three participants needed to be excluded from the Smile condition and seven needed to be excluded from the Pout condition. Anticipating possible exclusions with additional data collection, it was determined that and additional 16 participants needed to be recruited through the experiment management website. A similar analysis of the exclusion rule variables was conducted after the additional 16 participants completed the experiment. This analysis revealed that there was a minimum of 50 participants in each condition; therefore, data collected was terminated. **Randomization to conditions:** The first 100 participants were pseudorandomly assigned with every other participant assigned to each condition. After the exclusion rules were applied, additional participants were randomly assigned to each condition using a random number generator until the minimum sample size requirement was obtained. **Blinding to conditions:** When two subjects participated in the study at the same time, they were approximately 10 feet apart with their backs were facing each other. Both subjects started at the same time and remained at their station until both had completed the study. This arrangement ensured that neither subject was aware of how the other individual was holding the pen. **Exclusion rules:** The same exclusion rules required by the official protocol were applied. ---------- #### Software/Code #### All materials used in this experiment were provided in the official protocol. ---------- #### Differences from the official protocol #### This experiment followed the official protocol. No variations were made to the experiment. [1]: https://osf.io/6wvj4/ [2]: https://osf.io/hgi2y/ [3]: https://osf.io/pkd65/
