Wiki Version:
Participants are recruited through an online subject pool (i.e., SONA website). Participants will be comprised of University of Nebraska-Lincoln college students only. The psychology department at UNL has a number of classes each semester that award extra credit for research participation, using SONA. Participants are individually assigned to conditions based on the random assignment option on Qualtrics. Each participant has an equal opportunity to be in each condition. Participants are tested in small groups of three. The room has three computers separated with dividers to maintain individual participation. Participants are unable to see or hear the other participants. The only a-priori exclusion criteria will be English fluency and the ability to follow a video shown on a computer screen, about which participants will be informed when they sign up for the study. Demographic data will be collected and monitored throughout the collection process (i.e., gender, age, race). Our subject pool is typically about 8-10% minority (non-White). We will therefore continue collecting data until 160 participants have gone through the procedure, enabling us to meet our target sample size. Participants who do not meet the requirement of race will be promptly excluded prior to analysis. Final sample size will be approximately 150 participants, roughly half in each condition. The total will not include participants that have been excluded prior to analysis. We will continue collection until we have reached 160 participants or 50 in each condition, whichever comes later. Participants view a test video of a bank robbery. The video begins with a man walking into the room, reaching into his coat and pulling out a piece of paper to complete a banking transaction. He says to the teller "Just follow the instructions, don't press the alarm, and you won't get hurt." He holds his hand inside the coat appearing to have a weapon, but no weapon is visible. The man looks from side to side multiple times and then grabs a full paper bag. Immediately after the participants have viewed the video they spend 5 minutes either describing the robber (experimental condition) or listing countries and their capitals (control condition). After 3 minutes a research assistant will say: "Please continue with your task. It is important that you continue working for the full 5 minutes to provide as complete an answer as possible." They then complete an unrelated filler task for 20 minutes (an easy crossword puzzle). Finally, they view an image depicting 8 people and select the one who was in the bank robbery video (or indicate that the robber is not present in the lineup) and rate their confidence in their selection. Participants will be fully debriefed upon completion of the identification task.
