Wiki Version:
Once the data for all 350 participants are in, we will remove data from participants who are non-native speakers of English. We will also remove data from participants exhibiting "reading" times shorter than 0.05 seconds per word, and from participants that indicated they had extremely difficulty understanding the police record. If removing participants leads to fewer than 100 participants per condition, we will collect additional data until this criterion is met. In case of unequal numbers of participants per condition, we will remove the last-run participants of the conditions with the most participants until all groups have the same sample size. For each participant we will use the two credibility scores (police record and suspect) and the two reliability scores (police record and suspect). We will perform a 2 (credibility) x 2 (reliability) ANOVA to examine if these scores differ across conditions. We will perform a chi-square test to examine if the guilty judgments differ across conditions. Because this measure is not very sensitive, we will also take the confidence of their guilty judgment into account.
