Description: This presentation will explore The Roswell Museum Federal Art Center, a project I made on Scalar documenting the early history of the Roswell Museum and Art Center in New Mexico, where I served as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions from 2013-2018. I created this Scalar book during my first semester at William & Mary in 2018 as my final project for a seminar on digital humanities. In this presentation I will discuss how I used the nonlinear capabilities of Scalar to evoke the open-endedness of my own experiences researching the Roswell Museum archive, encouraging visitors to pursue their own interests or questions rather than follow a specific narrative. Additionally, I will consider how Scalar as a non-hierarchical digital platform, particularly its linking capabilities, encouraged me to approach my own research through a more critical lens regarding archival theory. What started as a documentation project became an opportunity to explore questions of representation in the archive through the digital humanities. I will conclude by sharing future possibilities for the project in terms of expansion, interpretation, and potential collaborations.
