Decomposing 'as if'
Jessica Rett (UCLA) and W. Starr (Cornell)

The goal of this paper is to provide a compositional account of 'as if' constructions based on the semantics of 'as' and 'if' as they occur across a variety of constructions and languages. We focus on constructions in which 'as if' modifies verbs and comments on propositions. We argue that, in both cases, 'as' functions in its usual role as a relativizer, and 'if' in its usual role as an interrogative complementizer.
