Wiki Version:
The sole method of collecting participant data will be through an online survey. The survey has been designed to take minimal time (2 to 10 minutes, depending on reading speed), and has been written in accessible language, to minimise attrition. The survey consists of questions intended for people who have directly witnessed or know of harassment and/or discrimination at their own workplace at some point over the past three years. The timeframe of three years has been chosen because of the increased likelihood that anything beyond that timeframe is subject to forgetting. Participants will be provided with an online link that takes them to the online information form, and after indicating their informed consent will answer up to 15 questions. Automatic decision trees within the survey will dictate exactly which, and how many, questions participants will be asked to respond to. After completing the short survey, participants will be thanked for their participation and shown a debriefing which will points them to additional resources they can use for free if they ever want to report workplace harassment and discrimination. The study will be pre-registered with the Open Science Framework. Data will be collated and examined by one of the three researchers, and the following three hypotheses will be tested: H1: Most individuals who witness, or know about, workplace harassment and discrimination never report it to their employer. H2: Most individuals who witness, or know about, workplace harassment and discrimination suffer adverse health (psychological and/or physical) consequences from it. H3: Most individuals who witness, or know about, workplace harassment and discrimination feel that there are specific barriers to disclosure, including fear of consequences to their own careers.
