**Experimenters** *Please describe the qualifications/training of those who will be conducting the testing, and how they were trained on the protocol. Note any expertise with the topic area or methods used in this study.* At our faculty, we have three paid research assistants (all research master students in psychology) and trained to run laboratory experiments. They will conduct the present experiment. Those conducting the experiment have therefore much experience in running laboratory experiments in general. They have acquired some knowledge about the topic area during their education. However, they will be blind to the specific purpose of this study. Caroline Schlinkert will provide the research assistants with the step-by-step procedure as outlined in Appendix A of the experimental protocol, and will practice this procedure a couple of times with the research assistants prior to the data collection. **Piloting / training** *Piloting should be done prior to registration of this plan -only after registration of this plan will participants' data be included in the final dataset. Please indicate here who in your lab has piloted the experiment and what they did - ran a pilot participant, ran another lab member as if they were a participant, etc.* Caroline Schlinkert has simulated being a participant to train the research assistants regarding the details of the protocol. During these practice rounds she also verified that the experiment works well on the computers. **Experimenter knowledge of expected outcomes** *The person running a participant ("experimenter") is required to explain the tasks to the participant, so the experimenters won't be blind to the condition. Thus the only way demand characteristics might be entirely avoided is if the experimenter doesn't know about the ego depletion phenomenon. Please note whether this is the case for your experimenters, and in the Results component you can later note how you verified this, or whether the experimenter learned during the course of the experiment what the meaning of the conditions was* Our experimenters will be blind to the purpose of the experiment and to the conditions of the experiment. Participants will receive the debriefing sheet in a closed envelope that will be prepared by Caroline Schlinkert to assure that the experimenters will not learn the aim of the study during data collection. After the data collection, we will probe the experimenters about the perceived purpose of the experiment by asking “What do you think was the overall purpose of the study?”. **Recruiting** *Explain how and from where the participants will be recruited. The study should be described as being on “word and number recognition and reaction time”* Undergraduate students from the VU University Amsterdam will participate in the study. We will advertise the study on flyers that are distributed in the cafeterias of the University. The flyers will promote the study under above-mentioned title and the compensation for participation. Students will arrive at the laboratory on a walk-in basis and will be able to participate any time within the opening hours of our walk-in laboratory. **Sample, subjects, and randomization** *Please add details about the planned number of subjects (must be more than 50 in each of the two conditions) in terms of the stopping rule for the data collection, including how you will ensure that they meet the demographic requirements of the protocol (e.g. you will keep running participants who self-register from your subject pool, in blocks of 10, until you have more than 50 in each condition that are 18 to 30 yrs old and until between 30% and 70% are female), how you assess whether the subject had English as their native language, etc.* We aim to collect 110 participants. Participants will only be included if they are between 18 and 30 years old and study at the VU University Amsterdam. We have an online participant registration system (EMS system) in our lab that keeps track of male/female ratios for each condition to ensure the required ratio. This system includes a participant list of all students that have participated in a study in our lab so far. The stats of this program reported a male/female ratio of 30/70 of the overall subject pool. The participants will be Dutch native speakers. Therefore, all of the material will be translated into Dutch and back-translated by two independent translators who master English as well as Dutch. *Will you use truly random assignment (flip a coin for each subject that comes in) or, e.g. generate a sequence containing 50 of each condition in random order and assign subjects based on the sequence until you run all 100? Give details. How will you collect additional data if some Ss have to be excluded? e.g. running blocks of 10 additional participants (with 5 assigned to each condition) until both conditions have at least the minimum sample size* We will create a randomization sheet that contains fifty-five 1s and fifty-five 2s randomly ordered. Participants will be assigned to conditions based on this list. After 50 people have taken part in our study, we will check whether the male/female ratio criterion is met so far. We will do this again after having run 80 participants. We will run five participants extra in each condition to have additional data in case of subject exclusion. If we still need to run extra participants, we will run blocks of 10 additional participants (with 5 assigned to each condition) until both conditions have at least the minimum sample size. **Setting/Lab/Equipment** *Please add a detailed description of the testing environment. Include details of any equipment/computers you will use. Please indicate the version of the EPRIME software are your machine(s).* In our laboratory, small testing cubicles with white walls (no windows) and equal lightening are equipped with desktop computers (Type: HP DC8000SFF; Monitor Size: 23" Widescreen; Resolution: 1920 x 1080; Refresh rate: 60Hz) to guarantee undisturbed individual testing of each participant. The cubicles have a door that can be closed. The protocol mentions that participants have to ring a bell to alert the experimenter of a task block ending. We will replace the bell ringing by asking participants to open the door when they are done with tasks blocks. We will use the E-Prime version 2.0.10.242.
