This is the repository for the manuscript 'The ties that bind: Computational, cross-cultural analyses of knots reveal their cultural evolutionary history and significance' by Kaaronen et al. (2024). Included are two files: **KnotData.xlsx**: A spreadsheet that includes ethnographic and archaeological knot documentation, including the Gauss codes of analysed knots. The file also contains cultural and linguistic details, as well as bibliographic data, enabling the location of original references. **KnotAnalysis.R**: All the R-code used for knot analysis and data visualisation. The code borrows some procedures from the GaussCodeR algorithm, documented in our work on string figures: https://osf.io/preprints/osf/yxpg8 **Contact**: https://roopekaaronen.net
