Wiki Version:
Analysis plan: - Means and standard deviations for the following variables: scores for each Army Beta subtest and the total Army Beta test, college GPA, and ACT Composite score. - Percentages and medians for the following variables: completion of each subtest and total Army Beta ratings. - Chi-squared tests comparing completion numbers for each subtest for Gould's (1981) sample and the modern sample. - Correlation matrix among the seven Army Beta subtest scores, the total Army Beta score, college GPA, and ACT Composite score. - Confirmatory factor analysis of the raw data to determine whether the seven Army Beta subtest scores support a one-factor congeneric model. An alternative model consisting two correlated factors, where the first factor consists of Tests 2, 4, and 5; the second factor would consist of the remaining tests (1, 3, 6, and 7). This is a plausible two-factor model because Tests 2, 4, and 5 require using written numbers--which Gould (1981) believed was problematic. The CFA model will be identified by standardizing factor variances to 1 because there is no clear "best" marker variable available. Theorized results: - Scores on the total Army Beta test will be as high or higher than Gould's (1981) students' scores: 58% of students rated as A, 30% of students rated as B, and 11.% of students rated as C. (alpha = .05). - Completion rates of the new sample will be similar to completion rates in Gould's (1981) sample, as determined by a chi-squared test (alpha = .05). - All variables in the correlation matrix will be positively correlated and statistically significant (one-tailed test, alpha = .05), with the possible exception of Test 1's score (which I believe will have low variance). - Confirmatory factor analysis will show good fit for a one-factor congeneric model. This one-factor model will fit the data better than the two-factor model. All analyses and theorized results were chosen after data collection and preparation but prior to any analyses.
