**Hypotheses - Study One** 1. We predict that participants will rank the recording of an applicant speaking in an Urban English dialect and engaging in the norms associated with that vernacular will be rated as less hirable and less competent compared to both of the recordings of an applicant speaking in a majority dialect, either Standard English and Southern American English, holding all other elements of the phone interview constant (e.g., exact interviewee responses, interviewer questions, comprehensibility of the dialogue, etc.). 1. We predict that participants will rank the recording of an applicant speaking in an Southern American English dialect and engaging in the norms associated with that vernacular will be rated as less hirable and less competent compared to the recording of an applicant speaking in a majority dialect, Standard English; but, will be rated as more hirable and more competent than the recording of an applicant speaking in a minority dialect, Urban English, holding all other elements of the phone interview constant (e.g., exact interviewee responses, interviewer questions, comprehensibility of the dialogue, etc.).
