Implementation Details ---------------------- This page describes how our lab implemented the procedures required by the official protocol for the RRR. It also describes and justifies any departures from that protocol. You can view the official protocl and the main project page for this RRR using these links: - Official Protocol: [https://osf.io/2h6tf/][1] - Main RRR project page: [https://osf.io/s3hfr/][2] ---------- #### Experimenters #### As per our application, the study is being overseen by two PIs with doctoral level training in social and social-organizational psychology. A white, female undergraduate experimenter, with prior experience running participants and collecting data, will run all conditions. She went through an hour training on the protocol with one of the principle investigators and ran several test participants in the lab space where the study will be conducted to work out any logistical issues. The experimenter is unaware of the study conditions, as the PIs arranged all condition assignments and stimulus materials prior to her selection and training. She was only instructed to follow the script and was given the same general cover story as the participants. She is not aware of the full purpose of the study. ---------- #### Setting/Lab/Equipment #### The study will take place at a small laboratory space (a converted 2 bedroom house) located just off of the main university campus but with easy access for students. Students enter the lab through a front door and step into a foyer. The research assistant will meet with participants in the foyer and review the informed consent documents with them. Once participants consent, they will be directed into a small, interior private room. The room has two desks, each with a desktop computer, and a small filing cabinet. Two sets of stimulus materials will be placed inside of a file cabinet. These materials will be pre-numbered with participant IDs and separated into two piles (e.g., one for male participants and one for female participants). The materials within each pile will be ordered according to the random condition assignments generated by the R code. When the participant enters the space, the research assistant will provide him or her with the correct stimulus materials, taking the top copy off of the pile. The RA will follow the script and direct participants to complete the paper survey, followed by the online survey. Given the set up of the lab, we will test either one or two participants at a time. If we test two participants at the same time, we will arrange the space so that they cannot see or talk with each other. The research assistant will wait in the foyer so that participants will not feel observed while completing the study. ---------- #### Sample, subjects, and randomization #### **Target sample size:** 100 participants in total. **Target sample demographics:** Students at this university are majority white and female. We will sample undergraduate students from introductory psychology (mainly freshmen) and research methods (mainly sophomores). Participants will receive extra credit for participating. **Minimum sample size after exclusions:** We will sample at least 100 participants; 50 in each condition. **Stopping rule(s):** We plan to test 100 participants with 50 in each condition. If, after exclusions, we have fewer than 50 participants in either condition, we will schedule additional groups of 10 participants using the same randomization procedures until we have at least 50 participants in each condition after exclusions. All data will be collected during the Fall 2015 semester. Data collection will begin immediately upon receiving approval. **Randomization to conditions:** The official protocol gives explicit directions for how to randomly assign participants to conditions, and the main project page for this RRR provides an R script that all labs will use to generate these random condition assignments. **Blinding to conditions:** The official protocol will be followed and all testing will take place in the same space. There is nothing in the space to indicate that this is a multi-condition experiment. We will test either one or two participants at a time. If we test two participants at the same time, we will arrange the space so that they cannot see or talk with each other. Stimulus materials are also hidden inside a filing cabinet, making it impossible for participants to see the materials from another condition. **Exclusion rules:** We do not intend to use any exclusion rules other than those included in the official protocol. ---------- #### Software/Code #### We will use all provided materials. We have also set up the survey in Qualtrics and have tested it to confirm that it works in the lab space. ---------- #### Differences from the official protocol #### At the moment, there are no deviations from the official prtocol.
