Implementation Details ---------------------- This page describes how our lab implemented the procedures required by the official protocol for the RRR. It also describes and justifies any departures from that protocol. You can view the official protocl and the main project page for this RRR using these links: - Official Protocol: [https://osf.io/2h6tf/][1] - Main RRR project page: [https://osf.io/s3hfr/][2] ---------- #### Experimenters #### Natasha Tidwell holds a PhD in Social Psychology from Texas A&M University, and her research expertise is in intimate relationships and attraction. She has been active in research in this field for the past 6 years. Sue Kraus holds a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has been active in social psychological research for the past 20 years. All undergraduate research assistants were trained on the protocol through a series of weekly meetings and practice sessions during May 2015. During data collection, research assistants will be closely supervised and trained by Drs. Tidwell and Kraus. During each session, each stack of experimental packets will be prerandomized by Drs. Tidwell and Kraus to ensure that experimenters are blind to the condition assignment of participants. ---------- #### Setting/Lab/Equipment #### Participants will complete the study in small groups of approximately 5-10. The studies will be conducted on HP desktop computers. For privacy, participants will be seated at alternating stations (i.e., every other computer will be occupied). Please see uploaded images of lab space under "Files" for further clarification. ---------- #### Sample, subjects, and randomization #### Target sample size: 100 We plan to collect data until a total of 100 participants in relationships have completed the study. Target sample demographics: We will recruit students at Fort Lewis College, a four year public liberal arts college in Durango, Colorado. The majority of our participants will be enrolled in introductory psychology classes, with recruitment from other lower division classes if needed. Our students are approximately 30% Native American/Alaska Native, 10% Hispanic/Latino and approximately 60% Caucasian. While the campus has almost equal numbers of male and female students, we anticipate close to 60-70% women given the demographics of our psychology courses. Minimum sample size after exclusions: 50 participants in each condition (100 participants total) Stopping rule(s): We will monitor the number of participants throughout data collection and stop once we have reached 50 participants per condition. If we discover at this time that any participants need to be excluded from the study because of ineligibility or software/experimenter error, we will seek to collect data from additional participants until the minimum sample size of 50 per condition has been reached again. Randomization to conditions: The official protocol gives explicit directions for how to randomly assign participants to conditions, and the main project page for this RRR provides an R script that all labs will use to generate these random condition assignments. **Blinding to conditions:** We will ensure that participants will only be able to view their own priming condition by seating them at separate stations and keeping an empty seat on either side of each participant. In addition, during the debriefing we will ask participants not to talk with anyone about the study until all data are collected. **Exclusion rules:** We will be using the same exclusion rules required by the official protocol. ---------- #### Software/Code #### We will be using the provided materials, including software or scripts. We verified that they work in our laboratory during May 2015. ---------- #### Differences from the official protocol #### We do not have a traditional subject pool, but we will recruit verbally in Introductory Psychology classes and offer research experience credit to stay true to the protocol.
